Know exactly what to wear for today's run
GearCheck turns your local weather into a concrete running outfit — base layers, outer layers, bottoms, and accessories — using a transparent rule engine, not guesswork. It accounts for wind chill, heat index, rain, sun, and your personal cold- or warm-running preference.
How it works
- Share your location — it reads temperature, wind, humidity, UV, and sky.
- Set whether you run cold or warm with a single slider.
- Get your outfit for today, plus the conditions the engine reacted to.
Frequently asked questions
- What should I wear running in cold weather?
- Below about 40°F, GearCheck recommends a thermal base layer, a jacket, full-length tights, a warm hat, and gloves — adding a neck warmer below 25°F. It factors in wind chill, so a windy 35°F day dresses colder than a calm one.
- What should I wear running in the rain?
- Rain saps body heat, so GearCheck applies a wet-chill penalty to the effective temperature and favors a water-resistant outer layer plus a brimmed cap to keep rain out of your eyes.
- Shorts or tights — when do I switch?
- Shorts once the effective temperature reaches about 55°F, tights below it. You can nudge the cutoff with the “I run cold / I run warm” slider if you always feel warmer or colder than average.
- When do I need sunscreen and sunglasses?
- On warm, sunny days with real UV. GearCheck adds sunscreen when it's warm, the sky lets the sun through, and the UV index is meaningful, and suggests sunglasses when UV is elevated.
- Is GearCheck free? Do I need an account?
- Yes, it's free, and no account is required. It reads your local weather in the browser and gives a recommendation instantly. It also installs as a Progressive Web App and shows your last reading offline.
